My personal story of why I participate in the Covenant House Mothers or Daughters Sleepout (link in bio). Chapter one of two… long post alert – thank you for taking the time to read both posts. My first visit to Covenant House was because my company Good Space was a monthly donor. We were invited to see the facility and hear about the programs. As soon as the conversation began about the services and programs offered, I started to cry. My heart just broke open, without conscious awareness at the time it triggered my own past experiences. It was so clear to me that providing a safe space of unconditional love, accountability and support was vital to healing the things in this world that break my heart. Loneliness, homelessness, addiction, untreated mental illness, violence, rape, hunger, lack of community, lack of acceptance, shame. Through the healing work of my own grief and hearing the stories of the young people at Covenant House I realised at one time in my life I was homeless. I had never seen the truth of it before. I didn’t have language for it. I was ashamed of it. I had left home, something I started doing at 14. So, when I was 15 years old, I was sleeping on sofas, floors and in the back of cars. I was sad, lonely and confused. I remember walking all night one holiday long weekend in White Rock B.C. looking in the glowing windows of homes at families and gatherings. My heart ached for what I believed I didn’t have or couldn’t have. This part of my life lasted until I was 16, pregnant, living in a small apartment and working at a diner in White Rock. It was then that I moved back to my family in Northern B.C., became a mother and started to create a life for myself and my daughter. (end of chapter one…please see post chapter two) #covenanthousevancouver #chsleepout #generosity

My personal story of why I participate in the Covenant House Mothers or Daughters Sleepout (link in bio). Chapter two of two. (link in bio) The blame and shame I felt about myself lasted a long time, I had very little compassion for myself. Shame is cruel and toxic, and it spreads. My shift to a deeper understanding happened through loving professional support after my husband died by suicide and I was processing my grief and loss. I was healing, I started to see myself at that time in my life as young, confused and traumatised. I asked myself, “as an adult and mother how I would treat her if she was sitting in front of my 55-year-old self”? My response felt like that day I toured Covenant House, my heart broke open. I realised that what we all need, no matter where we are in our life is acceptance for exactly where we are. To feel unconditional love, to be witnessed and to be shown the way to our own wisdom and healing work. I believe that the work and “continuum of care” offered through Covenant House addresses all of these things. It provides the opportunity, support and space for these kids to do the work of healing and learning to grow into and know their true worth and value. From this place of knowing, these young people offer their distinct gifts and unique selves to the world. I know with all my heart that Covenant House provides this to the young people who walk through their doors and I am so grateful that they do. It gives me so much hope! Covenant House operates their programs with virtually no government funding so we the community are the source of 95% of the funding.
